Peter Malone has been appointed interim head coach of the Ireland under-20s for June's World Championship in Georgia.

The current Munster Elite Player Development Manager will take up the position that has been held by Nigel Carolan, who he had assisted within the Ireland under-20 setup since 2015.

Carolan had been added to the coaching team under Connacht's incoming head coach Kieran Keane for next season.

As well as his role with the Ireland under-20s, Carolan had been the province's Academy Manager for the past 13 years.

Ulster Academy manager and Ireland under-19 head coach Kieran Campbell will also join the under-20 team for the World Championships.

"Peter's experience at this level and knowledge of the player group will provide important continuity ahead of June's World Rugby U20 Championship. Kieran will also add a wealth of experience to the coaching group," said IRFU Performance Director David Nucifora.

"Nigel has done some fantastic work with the U20s over the past three years including reaching last year's U20 Championship final. We are delighted that Connacht have offered him the opportunity to further develop as a coach in a senior role with the provincial side.

"The coaching opportunity with the U20 squad is an important element in the IRFU's coach development pathway as it provides our Academy coaches with an outlet to develop and challenge themselves within the international game."
