Peter O'Mahony ruled out of the Rugby World Cup

Ireland flanker Peter O'Mahony has been ruled out of the remainder of the Rugby World Cup after sustaining a knee ligament injury in yesterday's defeat of France.

Paul O'Connell stayed overnight in hospital in Cardiff after a hamstring injury saw the Irish captain leave the field on a stretcher at half time. Despite O'Connell's night in hospital he remains part of the squad and is awaiting results of scans.

Johnny Sexton also had a scan yesterday on a groin injury but the Irish backroom staff remain "hopeful" of Sexton continuing in the tournament. The fly half was replaced midway through the first half in yesterday's game.

O'Mahony is the second player to leave the squad in three days, after Jared Payne was ruled out on Saturday. Replacements for the two players are expected to be announced later today ahead of Sunday's quarter final against Argentina.
