Phil Thompson played for Liverpool during the club's most successful spell in the 1970s and 1980s.

In all, he won seven Division 1 titles and two European Cups as well as a multitude of other accolades.

Off the Ball's Nathan Murphy caught up with him ahead of the new Premier League season and, asked if there had been many big changes at Anfield since he played, he said: "Absolutely, especially with the new stand. The new stand is just exceptional, all that goes on within it which a lot of people won't understand.

"I love the old stadium, the way it was, the way the dressing rooms were and for me going back as sort of an apprentice to starting to play to going on to lifting trophies in the same dressing room and the same surroundings but the game has moved on. And, I can kind of understand exactly what Bish (John Bishop) said about that.

"And although you still love the club particularly when you're a Liverpool person, you'll love the club - you'll just feel all that side of it has gone away.

"The other side of that is that as guys, we frequented town - not just the nightclubs but the pubs and you'd be in there, you'd see a lot of people and you'd just chat to people. You were there for a pint and so you were down to earth. It was just going in there...you were so accessible to people and I think that was the thing...there were unwritten rules on how you behave as a Liverpool player. You took that on."
