Portstewart Golf Club to host the 2017 Irish Open

Next year's Irish Open will be held at the Portstewart Golf Club in County Derry.

The European Tour has agreed to move the tournament's slot on their calendar to bring it closer to the start of The Open Championship, which means that the 2017 Irish Open will be held from July 6-9th.

Tournament host Rory McIlroy will be looking to defend the title that he won earlier this year at the K Club.

"Portstewart is an excellent links course and one of Northern Ireland’s hidden gems, so it’s great news that we are taking the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open there next year. Winning at The K Club earlier this year was without doubt one of the highlights of my career, and I’m already looking forward to defending my title at Portstewart next July," he told the European Tour website.

It is the first time that Portstewart will stage the tournament, the course is located close to the venue for the 2012 Irish Open, Royal Portrush, which is set to host the Open Championship in 2019.
