Preston duo to refund fans their tickets after on-field fight

One of the weekend's weirdest moments in the final minutes of Preston North End's away game against Sheffield Wednesday.

Preston's Eoin Doyle and Jermaine Beckford were both sent off for fighting each other. The duo were given straight red cards as the team chased an equalising goal in the 2-1 Championship defeat.

The club confirmed they are not to appeal the red cards, and have taken a novel approach to fining the players for their actions. The fines will be used to refund Preston fans their ticket price from the game in Hillsborough.

Speaking to the club's website, Preston manager Simon Grayson said that the matter was now closed.

"The fans who travelled to Sheffield Wednesday were let down by the actions of Jermaine Beckford and Eoin Doyle and it is only right that the fines imposed on the players are used to refund the cost of the ticket money for the fixture."

"It has been made very clear to the players and the squad as a whole that this behaviour is not acceptable by any employee of Preston North End and a swift and strong response was important."

Both Doyle and Beckford apologised for their actions in a joint statement.

“Our behaviour was not acceptable in any walk of life, let alone on a football pitch."

“We let down the management, our team-mates and most importantly the supporters, who had spent a lot of money to support the team."
