Rangers are to return to the top-flight of Scottish football for the first time since 2012 after winning the Scottish Championship on Tuesday night.

Mark Warburton's side recorded a 1-0 win against Dumbarton at Ibrox. The win pushes Rangers 17-points clear at the top of the table with only four games left in the season.

James Tavernier scored the game's only goal to seal the title for Rangers.

It has been a long road back for Rangers to the top-tier after the club was placed in administration and liquidated in 2012. The Glasgow side were forced to re-enter Scottish football in the bottom tier of the professional game, as a return to the Scottish Premiership looked a long way off.

Back-to-back promotions from the Third Division and League One helped Rangers move up the divisions but it took two seasons to get promoted from the Scottish Championship, culminating in Tuesday's win.

Rangers' return to the Scottish Premiership means there will be at least three Old Firm games against Celtic next season. Since Rangers' relegation, the two teams have only met once. That game happened last year in the semi-finals of the Scottish League Cup, which Celtic won 2-0. The two teams meet again later this month in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup at Hampden Park.
