Richie Towell earns contract extension with Brighton

Brighton & Hove Albion have extended Richie Towell's contract, which will keep him at the club until 2019.

Since joining the club from Dundalk, Towell has struggled to get game time with the club, which recently earned promotion to the Premier League.

They defeated Wigan Athletic last month to strengthen their chances of getting into the top flight. That result was followed by a draw between Derby County and Huddersfield Town, to confirm their promotion.

Towell's progression at the club has been hampered by injury, an issue which he spoke about on Off The Ball last December.

Team manager Chris Hughton said earlier this week that Towell, along with midfielder Rohan Ince, would both be leaving the club to go on loan this season. He told The Argus:

"Players like Rohan and Richie will go out on loan. We have been really delighted with Richie but we are very keen for him to get out on loan to the Championship next season."

The club confirmed today that Towell has been offered a contract extension, while David Stockdale, Gaetan Bong, Steve Sidwell and Niki Maenpaa are the other players to secure new deals.

Speaking about the contract news, Hughton said:

"I'm sure this won't come as a major surprise to most people - and we hope the four players we have offered new contracts will be with us next season for our first season in the Premier League."
