Richie Towell has signed for Championship high-flyers Brighton and Hove Albion

Brighton and Hove Albion has this morning announced the signing of former Dundalk midfielder Richie Towell on a two and a half year contract.

The 24-year-old will not be able to make his debut until the Transfer Window opens in January. Towell's debut may come in the FA Cup Third Round when Brighton enter the tournament.

Towell joined Dundalk in December 2012 and was part of the side that has dominated domestic football in recent years. He won two league titles in the past two years with Dundalk and scored the winning goal in this year's FAI Cup final as Dundalk defeated Cork City in extra time. He was top scorer in the league last season scoring 25 goals from midfield.

Former Irish international Chris Hughton is Brighton's manager and he was delighted with Towell's signing.  "Richie's had a wonderful season in Ireland and scored a lot of goals for the champions Dundalk from midfield, and that really caught our eye. He is something different to the number of very good midfield options we already have here at the club, and I am really looking forward to having him as part of our squad in the New Year."

Despite the League season only finishing earlier this month, Hughton told Brighton's official website that he expects Towell to enter the squad straight away. "He's played a full season since March, but has already made it clear he is keen to be ready to play in January, and keen to begin training with us as soon as possible. We will give him some time off for a well-deserved break, as he's played a lot of football in the past nine months, but I am certain he will be ready for us in January and will be an excellent addition to the squad."
