One of the all time great Serie A careers will come to an end shortly with confirmation that the 2016-17 season will be the final one for Francesco Totti.

Roma's new sporting director Monchi confirmed the news that Serie A's second highest all time goalscorer will retire and become a club director.

The 2006 World Cup winner is among the last of football's one-club men, having stayed loyal to Serie A side AS Roma for the entirety of his career.

The legendary forward made his debut for hometown club Roma as a 16 year old back in the 1992-93 season and is in his 25th career as a senior professional at the club.

In recent campaigns, the 40 year old Roman has become an impact substitute rather than the focal point. The 2016-17 season has seen the former Italy international make 15 appearances, scoring two goals and contributing three assists, with just one 90 minute appearance in Serie A.

He made a 17 minute cameo appearance at the end of Roma's derby defeat to Lazio on Sunday.

While Totti may well have won more trophies had he moved to some of the clubs that had been interested in him in his peak years, he did win Serie A with Roma in 2000-01 (only the Scudetto in their history), while he also won the Coppa Italia on two occasions for the club.

Are Monchi and a new stadium about to spark a Roma empire?
