Rory McIlroy battling on despite food poisoning

Rory McIlroy is just one shot off the lead at the WGC Mexico Championship, but the world number three has had to overcome food poisoning on the way to making that impressive start in the opening round.

Speaking to the media after the opening round, McIlroy explained that he was 'worshipping the porcelain' the night before, and didn't get much sleep after 3am.

McIroy said he went to dinner with his fiancee Erica and his parents, but that he was the only one to suffer any ill-effects after the meal.

He told The Guardian:

"I don’t really want to tell you what I’m feeling right now, I’m definitely a bit weak. I haven’t eaten anything since breakfast, so I’m a little weak."

This isn't the first time that McIlroy has suffered from food poisoning while away on competitive duty. In 2015, he was struck with the same condition after eating a club sandwich in Shanghai, but having battled back to full fitness from a rib injury, McIlroy stressed that he was not going to let the symptoms diminish him this week.

"I've waited long enough to play. I wanted to get out here and be competitive and try to shoot a good score. I don't feel anywhere near as bad as I did in China, so hopefully it's just a day thing, it will pass and I'll wake up feeling a bit better tomorrow."

27-year-old McIlroy carded a three-under 68 in the opening round, to leave him in a tie for second place alongside Matt Kuchar, Sergio Garcia and others.
