Rory McIlroy responds to criticism from Australian golfer Steve Elkington

For the first time since golf's official world rankings were introduced in 1986, the top three have failed to make the cut at the same major.

World number one Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day won't be involved in Saturday's third round at the US Open.

McIlroy said after his round that he was rusty having not played much competitive golf recently.

"It's game-time, it's reps and it's competitive rounds," he told Sky Sports. "I'm looking forward to playing some golf over the summer to get some rounds in and improve on what I've shown this week."

The four-time major winner also took time to respond to Australian golfer Steve Elkington, who tweeted: "Rory is so bored playiing golf... Without Tiger the threshold is prolly 4 majors with 100mill in bank."

McIlroy responded: "More like 200mil... not bad for a "bored" 28 year old... plenty more where that came from."
