Roscommon lose two former captains to retirement ahead of 2017 season

Two former captains have announced their retirement from the senior football team.

Former goalkeeper Geoffrey Claffey and minor All-Ireland winner Niall Carty have both indicated their intention to retire ahead of the upcoming season.

Claffey made his senior debut against Galway in 2006 before captaining the team in 2012. Carty, who was part of the minor All-Ireland winning panel in 2006, made his senior bow in 2011 and was appointed captain when they won successive National League titles in 2014 and 2015.

Carty, who has been hindered by injuries, hopes to continue playing with his club Padraig Pearses while goalkeeper Claffey intends to withdraw from club football.

Reacting to the news, Roscommon manager Kevin McStay said:

"Like all Roscommon people I wish both men well, they made significant contributions to two of the greatest days in recent Roscommon history; Niall in  the All Ireland Minor Final Victory in 2006 and Geoffrey in the Connacht Final victory of 2010."
