We all know Jason Sherlock the Dublin footballer, but it could so easily have been Jason Sherlock, the Liverpool superstar…

The 1995 All-Ireland winner revealed on today's Now That's What I Call Sport just how close he came to swapping blue for red, before his inter-county career took off with Dublin.

Sherlock had been plying his soccer trade with UCD in the League of Ireland First Division, when a friendly clash with Liverpool at the old Lansdowne Rd at the end of the 1994/95 season almost changed his life.

He joined Off The Ball’s Jamie Moore for a chat recently, to discuss his new autobiography Jayo:

“I spoke to Roy Evans after the game”, Sherlock said. “He said 'listen you did really well, we’d love to get you over.

"That was May of ’95, and I was going in to get involved with the Dublin senior team. That was probably as close as I got to playing for Liverpool.

"Obviously the summer took a different turn from my own point of view- it was very successful.

"Once we won the All-Ireland and the notoriety that came with me being involved and the attention that I got, I think the whole motivation was to be accepted and I really felt in ’95 that I was accepted.

“That probably took away from my sporting motivation for a couple of years, because I was kinda happy just to be known.

“The Liverpool thing- that’s as close as I got. That’s my 'I could’ve been a contender' story! But the way things have worked out over the last few years, I wouldn’t have had it any other way."
