Carbery on Sexton: "If you're competing with the best - then you have to be better yourself"

The young out-half relishes the opportunity working with Johnny Sexton on a daily basis

Joey Carbery insists that working with Johnny Sexton on a daily basis can only be good for the both of them in the long term.

The Leinster utility player had seen his game-time at out-half hard to come by with Ireland pivot Johnny Sexton the preferred option at 10 for both country and province. Ross Byrne also provides competition for the position at domestic level but Carbery is happy with the current set-up.

Speaking to Off the Ball's Oisin Langan at a media day on Tuesday, he said: "If you're competing with the best then you have to, obviously, be better yourself so I look at it that way than not being played.

"He's making me better and I know, me being better will make him better. Even if you watch the last five minutes (against France), if I can take half of what he did there into my game then I'll be improving everyday.

Asked if he's ever been on the receiving end of one of Sexton's famous dressing-downs, he said: "I suppose sometimes yeah but he just wants perfection and that makes everyone play better so you don't mind it too much if you're on the end of it."
