Conor Murray believes Ireland’s phase play was frustrating; says they will improve

Ireland scrum half Conor Murray says Ireland have areas they need to improve on after yesterday’s last gasp 15-13 victory over the French in Paris.

The Irish lacked creativity during the match and Murray is adamant they will improve next week ahead of facing Italy in the Aviva stadium.

The Munster man believes the conditions also hindered Ireland’s attacking prowess in the match.

Murray spoke with OTB’s Oisin Langan post-game in Stade de France.

The Garryowen man wasn’t happy with Ireland’s lack of dominant control at the breakdown, despite the team putting together an incredible 41 phase leading up to the final play of the game. Ireland clocked in 68% territory in the match but failed to cross the line for a try.

“The breakdown, especially. They put a lot of pressure on us at the breakdown. I think we are a really good side when we get on the front foot, like any good side is. I think they targeted our breakdown, and quite a good job on it, said Murray.’

Murray also believes the lack of discipline in the French pack was a key element to Ireland’s lack of momentum, throughout the duration of the game. “Les Bleus” gave away a total of ten penalties during the 80 minutes.

He says Joe Schmidt’s men will look to improve their rucking in training this week, ahead of the Italy game in Dublin, next week. Ireland conceded a total of 13 turnover during the match.

“They were a little bit ill disciplined when we are getting into our attacking game, and our phase game will be a little bit frustrating. It’s an area we’ll look to build on.”
