"We've a very pressurised environment here - you succeed or fail very quickly"

With Geordan Murphy taking the helm at Leicester Tigers to add to the Irish contingent coaching abroad, Alan Quinlan was quick to point out the ruthless environment in Ireland might not be the best place for coaches to develop.

Paul O'Connell recently joined Mike Prendergast at Stade Francais while Mark McCall is pulling the strings at Saracens and Ronan O'Gara is on the coaching ticket at the Crusaders.

The former Munster flanker joined Thursday's OTBAM telling Ger, "We've a very pressurised environment here - you succeed or fail very quickly. It can actually damage your reputation more to fail here in Ireland with the four provinces.

"If you don't do well, you're, kind of, cast aside. Les Kiss, Declan Kidney in London Irish. Look at Eddie O'Sullivan as well - we cast our coaches aside - who've had success with proven track records. So, we're very critical at times and it's unfair.

"Declan Kidney won a Grand Slam, two European Cups - he struggled to get a job here with one of the provinces...and you look at Eddie O'Sullivan's success with Ireland. Les Kiss is, kind of, tainted after the Ulster thing after being involved in a Grand Slam with Ireland so I think it's unfair, in a sense, but it's probably because it's smaller and there's less opportunities.

"You can jump around in France to different clubs. If you've a bad season with one team and get the sack - you could get a job in another club very quickly."

Quinlan was speaking after he believes Ronan O'Gara will stay for a second year at the Canterbury Crusaders in Super Rugby before returning to Europe next summer.
