"Reggie misinterpreted that" - Eddie O'Sullivan on Corrigan's Munster intensity question to Peter O'Mahony

With Ireland's FIFA World Cup qualifier against Wales live on Off The Ball on Monday night, Monday Night Rugby got a special Tuesday slot.

Former Ireland head coach Eddie O'Sullivan and ex-Leinster captain Liam Toland joined us to reflect on a weekend that saw Leinster defeat Munster at the Aviva Stadium in the Guinness Pro 14 as both sides gear up for the start of the European Rugby Champions Cup campaign this coming weekend.

So what did the Leinster vs Munster match reveal about both provinces' strengths and weaknesses.

Discussing Leinster, O'Sullivan responded: "Probably from Leinster's point of view, happy to get the result, but I think they'll be a little bit concerned that they were in control of the game throughout and never really kicked on and put Munster to the sword.

"I think they'll be disappointed that they really put nine points together in the second half, their maul didn't fire. Just I think it was a workmanlike performance that got them there but they'll look back and I think they'll feel that they'll probably have to pick it up a notch this week."

And how about their defeated opponents. O'Sullivan continued: "As for Munster, there's a lot going on at Munster at the moment and I'm not talking just about the whole coaching thing. I'm talking about the fact that the selection was quite strange. Three fly halves for the back line and probably a lack of strikers around the field which kind of hurt them a little bit. The only player they had obviously was the star of the show I thought and that was definitely [Keith] Earls, who was outstanding."

O'Sullivan also touched on the post-match TV interview conducted by ex-Leinster prop Reggie Corrigan with Munster captain Peter O'Mahony in which a line of questioning around intensity irked the Ireland international.

"I thought Reggie Corrigan's question to Peter O'Mahony afterwards which upset O'Mahony was about Munster's intensity and I think there was something in that but Reggie misinterpreted that," he said.

"I think Munster weren't as intense as they were expecting because they were playing with three fly halves and they were playing a very lateral game where you would expect them to be more confrontational.

"I think Peter took it up then that [Reggie] was questioning their commitment which I don't think he was but I think that's why Munster weren't at the fever pitch intensity that they were used to because they played a more expansive game."
