Robbie Henshaw laments "bitter pill" of his Lions tour injury

This summer was meant to be an even more busy one for Robbie Henshaw.

The Leinster and Ireland inside centre had been called up to the British and Irish Lions squad and had been expected to be in the mix for starts in the test games but for a shoulder injury in the Hurricanes match which curtailed his involvement.

Speaking to our own Oisin Langan in Tullow as Bank of Ireland and Leinster announced an extension to their sponsorship deal, the Athlone native expressed his disappointment in regard to the injury as he returns to the cusp of first team action.

"It was tough, it was a bitter pill to take. It was just in that moment, I knew it was the end of my tour from the severity of the pain. I couldn't really raise my arm so I was like, 'Yeah, that's me done,'" he said.

"For any player to get injured is probably the toughest challenge you face as a player but I suppose it being on a Lions tour and with the way some of the players were being picked, there was a chance for whoever did well to get onto the bench for the second test. So it was a pretty tough one to take but I think every player uses an injury as an opportunity to come back a better player."

Leinster are looking to build on a 2016-17 campaign when they reached the European Rugby Champions Cup semi finals and with many emerging talents introduced, got to the semi finals of what is now known as the Guinness Pro14 after losing to eventual champions Scarlets.

"The group is incredibly keen to push one step further because we know when we're on our game, we're the best team in Europe, I know we are," said the former Connacht player.

Bank of Ireland and Leinster Rugby have today announced a five year extension of their sponsorship through to the 2023 season.

The event was held in Tullow RFC, Tullow are the current holders of the Bank of Ireland Provincial Towns Cup.

In addition to exclusive branding of all playing and training kits for the Leinster Rugby professional team, the sponsorship continues to encompass all Leinster rugby activity right through to grassroots community, schools and club level.
