Russia to host their own Paralympics for team banned from going to Rio

Russia are planning to host their own Paralympics for the national squad who have been banned from the official event in Rio, according to a top sports official.

The R-Sport news agency writes that the alternative two-day competition will run from September 7-8 and will be held in training bases in the Moscow region.

The International Paralympic Committee originally imposed a ban on the Russian Paralympic team on the back of the McClaren report which uncovered a state sponsored doping programme in Russia. Team Russia, apart from their track and field athletes, was permitted to compete at the Olympics.

But the International Paralympic Committee imposed a blanket ban ahead of the Games in the Brazilian capital.

The Russian Paralympic association had an appeal on the ban rejected by the Court of Arbitration for sport which was their last legal option to overturn the verdict.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin promised to give Russia’s banned Paralympians a platform "to show all their skills," but it is not yet known if he will attend the event in Moscow next month.
