Russian athletes "may not make it back" in time for the Rio Olympics

The former head of the World Anti-Doping Agency has admitted that Russian track and field athletes "may not make it back" in time to compete at this Summer's Olympic Games.

Dick Pound was speaking on Wednesday morning at the Tackling Doping In Sport event in London. The Canadian was the author of Independent Commission Report into the state of Russian athletics.

The Russian Anti-Doping Agency were suspended last November over non-compliance issues by WADA. The Russian athletics federation was also banned indefinitely from all international competition.

Pound's comments are sure to be another blow to Russian sport. In the 2012 Olympics, Russia won 17 medals in athletics, including eight golds. Only the United States won more.
