Sean O'Shea is the real deal - Mike Quirke

Former Kerry Footballer Mike Quirke has heaped praise on Kerry forward Sean O’Shea.

Quirke was speaking on OTB AM with Ger Gilroy and Kerry native Eoin Sheahan about how Kerry are looking ahead of their Munster Senior Football Final against Cork.

Quirke believes O’Shea is certainly a player that has a bright future. “He (Eamon Fitzmaurice) knows that this guy going to be a mainstay at center forward, and we want to give him every opportunity to see something that’s going to come ahead of it.

“I think his playmaking is his big point. I know he can score off both feet but his ability to see the play and to be able to pick passes and get guys involved is what seperates him from the other guys.”

Looking ahead to this weekend’s final, Quirke is still unsure where Kerry stand in terms of the competition. “You can only base it off what we’ve seen in the Championship game against Clare and, I mean, after that game you’re saying they’re the best football team in the world!”

Even if Kerry do pull off a victory at the weekend the former Kerry midfielder is cautious to over-hype his native county. “It’s just hard to know until we get to those games against Galway, hopefully, and so on in that super 8.

“If they (Cork) play their own way we could, not see a hammering like we did against Clare, but we could see another comfortable victory for Kerry. I don’t think we’ll be any the wiser as to how good or bad Kerry really are.”

Quirke also commented on the new Super 8s system and how that is affecting the Provincial Championships. ”It’s like everybody’s in a rush to get there and we’re maybe forgetting Fermanagh in Ulster, Laois in Leinster, and while they’re big moments in their seasons, and the same with Cork, everybody’s just anxious to move on to those big games.”

However he is optimistic the new system will work. “If you get that game as the first game of the Super 8, Kerry against Galway in Croke Park, that’s what that month is going to be about, those big hitter games which is something we all want to see, like the hurling I suppose.”
