Seanie Johnston looks set to return to the Cavan squad

The Prodigal Son of Cavan GAA is to return to the county team.

Reports this morning claim that Cavan manger Terry Hyland has brought Cavan Gaels forward Seanie Johnston into the training squad for 2016.

Johnston last played for the county in 2011, before making a transfer to Kildare. He played for the Lillywhites for two years and became eligible to play for the team after a farcical appearance in the Kildare Hurling Championship.

To be eligible to play for Kieran McGeeney's team, Johnston had to play a game in the Kildare Championship. As there were no football fixtures, he played around 60 seconds for Coill Dubh before being substituted.

Johnston returned to Cavan Gaels in 2013, and played for the team this year as they reached the Cavan quarter-finals. He scored 0-4 in the loss to Kingscourt.

Hyland told The Sun that Johnston would be part of the squad if he proved himself to be good enough. “There is no point going back to the past. Sean will have to go out and prove himself to the fans and to the management again, like every other player will.”

Cavan begin their 2016 campaign away to Armagh in the Dr McKenna Cup on January 3rd.
