Shane Long apoligised to his manager for scoring only one goal against Villa

You've just scored one goal and directly assisted in two more, one would feel they ought to be happy with their performance.

Not so for Shane Long, as after an excellent display against Aston Villa yesterday, he could only apologise to his manager, Ronald Koeman, after the game.

The Irish international opened the scoring after heading home a Ryan Bertrand cross but felt he was wasteful with a number of other chance, hitting the bar on one occasion, leaving him feeling frustrated.

Long made a point of apologising to Koeman after the game, something that the Dutch coach felt exemplified that attitude of the player.

“In general of course positive because he is working hard, he is doing well and creating a lot of problems to the defenders.

“He apologised himself after the game that he wasn’t scoring more goals than one," said Koeman.

“That’s I think a good mentality because he had some good chances to score.

“He apologised to the manager. That’s good.

“He knows by himself he had more opportunities to score goals. That’s what I like.

“I never complain to a player who is working hard and doing everything.

“It’s part of the job missing chances.”
