Shane Long set to miss Ireland's qualifier against Austria

Shane Long is set to miss out on Ireland's 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Austria next month.

The Southampton forward has sustained a broken bone in his foot as confirmed by Southampton manager Claude Puel.

"Shane Long is unlucky with his broken metatarsal, but we will see him next season," said the Frenchman at a press conference ahead of the weekend's action.

The Boys in Green take on Austria, who they defeated in Vienna last November, on June 11th at the Aviva Stadium after friendlies against Mexico in New Jersey and Uruguay in Dublin.

Long had been named in Martin O'Neill's 38 man squad for the games but his absence leaves Kevin Doyle, David McGoldrick, Daryl Murphy, Jonathan Walters and Adam Rooney as the remaining forwards.

Long will also miss Southampton's final Premier League game of the season against Stoke this Sunday.

His last international goal came against Moldova in a 2018 World Cup qualifier last October.

Puel also described the introduction of retrospective bans for simulation as "a good thing".
