Shane Lowry finishes strong at Torrey Pines

Shane Lowry produced a strong finish on Sunday at the Farmers Insurance Open in Torrey Pines to climb 25 places during his final round.

The Offaly man was level par heading into the weekend and his third round of 72 looked to keep him out of contention for a top 20 finish. However, Lowry only picked up one bogey during his final round which gave him the momentum to elbow his way up the leaderboard.

Lowry made mostly pars on a steady opening nine holes. The Clara native picked up just a solitary birdie on six before closing out the front nine.

His birdie on 10 was offset by a bogey on 12 and after this blip he powered home. Lowry picked up a stroke on 14 before back-to-back birdies on the final two holes saw him alongside finish T33 alongside J.B. Holmes, Hideki Matsuyama and Emiliano Grillo.

Spain's Jon Rahm picked up his first victory on the PGA Tour, finishing three shots clear of Charles Howell III.

"The difference to before was that me and my caddie were rookies," Rahm told the Tour's official website after his round. "I was doing everything I needed but the putts just weren't falling. Today I was just focused on making the right shots."

Ireland's Padraig Harrington and Seamus Power were also in action at Torrey Pines last week but the pair failed to make the cut.

Tiger Woods made his return to the course at the Farmers Insurance Open last week but also missed the cut.
