Shane Lowry is just one off the lead after a superb opening round at the Players Championship.

Lowry pick up five shots in just four holes as he signed for a 7-under par 65.

That included an eagle on the 11th between birdies on the 10th and 12th holes at Sawgrass.

The Offaly golfer also birdied the 13th, 16th and 18th to make a spectacular turnaround, having been level par for the front nine.

He is one of four players tied for second, behind world number one Jason Day, who is on 8-under.

Padraig Harrington will be the next Irish player to tee-off, while Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy will also be in action later this evening.
