Shane Ryan says an ankle issue affected him as he missed out on a place in the 100 metre freestyle semi-final despite setting his fastest time of the year.
The Team Ireland swimmer finished second in his heat but ultimately missed out on a Top 16 semi-final place as he ended 40th fastest out of 59 in the opening heats overall.
"I'm happy to get under 50, definitely could have gone faster. [I] rolled my ankle yesterday, so that's been giving me a bit of problems after the 100 backstroke. Yesterday it's just been agonising so I can't flex it. So it's very hard to do it underwater and I didn't warm up my legs at all today. So it's a bit hard," he told Newstalk's Richie McCormack.
Ryan added that he will rehab his ankle ahead of the 50 metre freestyle on Thursday. He will be in Heat 6 for that event.
