Shaun Goater takes on non-league managerial reins

Shaun Goater has been appointed manager of English non-league side Ilkeston FC.

The club have confirmed that the former Manchester City striker "sees Ilkeston as an opportunity to experiment with his experience and new ideas" and will be in charge of the first team.

Ilkeston play in the  Northern Premier League Premier Division which is the seventh tier of English football.

They are second bottom of their division this season, having won just five of their 29 fixtures.

The Bermudan has previously managed a club once before in his native country.

On that occasion, he coached North Village Rams between 2008 and 2013.

The 46 year old, who joined Manchester United when he first arrived in England in 1988, forged a successful career at their derby rivals Manchester City between 1998 and 2003, earning cult hero status.

He would go on to score over 100 league goals for City during a spell which saw the club fluctuate between the old Second Division, First Division and Premier League.

With a play on his first name, City fans coined the chant "Feed The Goat And He Will Score" in his honour. The phrase "Feed the Goat" also formed part of the title of his autobiography.

Goater was top scorer for City in four successive seasons from 1998-99 to 2001-02.
