Shay Given released by Stoke City

Shay Given's time in professional football may be coming to an end, after he was released by Stoke City.

The Donegal-born goalkeeper played five league games for Stoke at the start of last season, but lost his place in the middle of September. He did not play for the rest of the season.

Given joined Stoke City at the start of the 2015-16 season and made 11 appearances over both seasons, conceding 24 goals.

The 41-year-old made his professional debut in the 1996-97 season for Blackburn Rovers, but is best remembered for his spell at Newcastle United where he made over 350 appearances.

After a move to Manchester City, Given also had spells with Aston Villa and Middlesbrough (loan) before his transfer to Stoke.

Given retired for the second time from international football last season at Euro 2016. He played 134 times for the Republic of Ireland from 1996 to 2016 and is the longest-serving Irish player in history from his debut to final appearance.

The club have also announced they have offered Stephen Ireland a new deal. The Cork-born midfielder is currently recuperating from a double leg break he suffered last May, which resulted in him missing all of last season.
