Manchester United could save £7m by sacking Jose Mourinho after Champions League exit

With his Manchester United future hanging in the balance, OffTheBall.com understands that Jose Mourinho stands to earn a significant sum while the club remain active in the 2018/19 Champions League.

Ahead of this morning’s draw for the first round of the Champions League knockout stages, reports regarding Jose Mourinho’s future at the club have become increasingly bleak. Widely expected to depart the club, it has long since become a question of when, rather than if.

Off the Ball understands that the decision-making process behind his departure may well be informed by the club’s European well-being.

Were the club to dispense with the Portuguese at this current moment in time, United would be contractually obliged to pay a fixed compensatory sum to Jose Mourinho.

However OTB understands that if Man United to find themselves knocked out of this season’s Champions League, this sum would be reduced by the sizable enough sum of £7m.

With United’s Champions League form one of the few redeeming features of the club’s season thus far, Mourinho’s side were nevertheless incapable of winning a last-round match against Valencia that would have seen them seeded for this morning’s draw.

As such, United face the potentially daunting task of meeting one of Barcelona, Bayern Munich or Real Madrid in the last-16 of the tournament.

Ultimately, if United are determined to carry out this money-saving measure, it would suggest that Jose Mourinho’s spell in charge may well stretch into the Spring of 2019, one way or another.
