Back in 1978, Liverpool were engaged in the beginning of a brief rivalry with Brian Clough's Nottingham Forest.
The first major clash came in the 1978 League Cup final which went to an Old Trafford replay that March which Forest won thanks to a dubious penalty decision.
John O'Hare was brought down but the foul by legendary Liverpool defender Phil Thompson occurred outside the box as TV replays later showed. The resulting penalty was converted and Forest won the first silverware of a trophy laden two years under Cloughie.
Thompson was incensed and according to a book called Football Talk, the now Sky Sports pundit described himself as "sick as a parrot" about what had happened. The phrase would supposedly gain traction in football circles as a descriptor for unpleasant feelings.
However, as Thompson himself told Team 33 at the launch of Sky Sports' coverage of the 2017-18 Premier League season in Dublin, he uttered "sick as a parrot" after a Merseyside derby loss to Everton in seven years rather than the League Cup final:
We also spoke to former Ireland midfielder Keith Andrews at the launch and he discussed his former team-mate Darron Gibson who was filmed by Sunderland fans criticising some of his current club colleagues.
"We’re quick to judge players and say they’re not in touch with reality and the average person out there," he said, adding that he can sympathise with Gibson's sentiments to a degree, although he feels it was "naive" overall to end up in that situation.
"You need to be very careful what you say. You can’t speak in a way that he did about the club and team-mates — certainly not to people you don’t know."
Andrews also discussed why he has never gravitated towards using social media himself:
