Team OTB’s Favourite World Cup TV Memories

With the 2018 World Cup a week away and Ireland absent yet again, we look back at the good old times in OTB when we had good memories as Irish fans.

Three of the team - Will O'Callaghan, Phil Egan and Raf Diallo - share their personal favourite memories of the World Cup and their recollection of the event live while showing no bias whatsoever towards their own country's moments!

Will spoke of the 2002 World Cup in Japan where Robbie Keane scored that goal against Germany, proving vital to sending us through to the last 16: "Germany were dominating the game, then Keane popped up to send us through. It’s such an Irish thing to celebrate a draw. The feeling was very deflated going into the World Cup with the Roy Keane incident but the optimism began to grow each game. We really thought we could do it and we should have beaten Spain. They were probably the best two weeks as an Irish fan."

You can’t have a World Cup discussion as an Irish fan and not mention Italia ‘90 and that brings us to our next chat with Phil who gave us his favourite moment of the tournament.

"David O’Learys penalty in the 1990 World Cup. I remember I ran out of the sitting room and slid down the hall, and got carpet burn. I don’t know why I did it, it was my first time. All I could here was a screaming baby overwhelmed because of all the emotion in the house," he says.

And our third guest makes it three from three for the Irish at the World Cup for memories, topping off the clearly "non biased" outlook. This time another memory from the 2002 World Cup coming in the form of Damien Duff.

Raf recalls his favourite memory: "It’s Damien Duff’s celebration against Saudi Arabia in the 2002 World Cup. I was nine and I remember sitting in the living room with my parents. It was such a good moment him bowing in front of the Japanese fans and then Robbie Keane jumping on his back. He got a big following because of that from fans from Asia back at Fulham even 10 years on."
