“They’ve never dominated in the Premier League” ”“ Richard Dunne urges Man City to build on title triumph

Richard Dunne believes his former side Manchester City need a dominant spell of winning Premier League titles before they can be regarded as one of the competition’s best ever teams.

The former City captain joined David McIntyre, Kevin Kilbane and Richie McCormack on Monday night’s Off The Ball to discuss Pep Guardiola’s latest triumph at the Etihad Stadium.

And Dunne feels, while thrilling to watch, City have to make up some ground on previous vintage sides, such as Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United.

“They’ve been fantastic,” Dunne told OTB.

“Every team over the past 25 years has the right to claim they were the best. But for me this Man City team the way they play is just so exciting that you want to watch them whenever they’re on the TV.

“You just want to watch all their games because you know you’ll be entertained. They play football the right way and try and win every match.

“Even if they get three, four or five goals up – they still want to go and score more goals. There’s never that mentality to sit back and hold on to what they’ve got – they always want more.

“I think that’s what fans want to see and to be entertained. The prices that people pay for tickets [means] they want to be entertained and that’s what City have done this year – they’ve been non-stop.”

City will end the season with two trophies to their name having picked up the Carabao Cup to go with their newly acquired Premier League title.

Champions League glory continues to elude the men in the blue side of Manchester and Dunne acknowledged his former employers are desperate to land Europe’s top prize.

“They want to be known as the best club in Europe. The problem they’ve had over the last 12 or 13 years since the owners have come in – even with all that money – they’ve never dominated in the Premier League," Dunne added.

“They’ve never won it back-to-back, they’ve only won it three times in that period. They will try to get a dominant spell in the Premier League where they maybe have five or six victories in the next 10 years and then they can say they’re the main team in England.

“The Champions League is always a tough one, because it only takes one mistake and it’s all over. They’ll keep building and they’ll keep pushing for it.

“And that will be their main aim and when they do reach that, I’m sure they’ll settle and be happy with what they’ve had. But until they win it, it’s just going to be constant investment until they do.”
