"We have to hit the ground running" - Kevin Kilbane on new Ireland management set-up

Former Republic of Ireland international Kevin Kilbane is looking forward to the prospect of Mick McCarthy taking over as manager of the senior side.

McCarthy is due to be unveiled at a press conference on Sunday with Stephen Kenny taking over as Under-21 manager with a view to moving into the senior role after the Euro 2022 campaign.

Kilbane was speaking on Off the Ball on Saturday about what he thinks McCarthy will bring to the team, telling Nathan: "I do think Mick will bring a lift straight away. I do think he'll change things up. Under Mick, what I felt was that we had different ways of playing.

"We had brilliant footballers - we had a style where if we needed to go direct into Niall (Quinn), we could go direct into him but we also had brilliant footballers - two brilliant fullbacks who could play whether it would be Steven Carr, Stephen Finnan, Ian Harte, Steve Staunton. Breeny was a good player himself - stepping into play.

"We had footballers all around the pitch and I think Mick will try to implement a style where everyone will know their role and he'll say 'Look, sometimes you might need to kick it into the stand' - it's basic football that gets the job done at times.

"But also, he will try and influence players to play a way where I think it will be entertaining to watch over a long period of time - not necessarily the first two games but we have to hit the ground running and that's the way it is," he added.

The FAI appear to have acted swiftly in replacing Martin O'Neill, who stepped down from his role as manager of the international set-up a few days ago.
