Kevin Kilbane: "I'm gutted if and when Costa goes"

As the summer transfer window approached, the expectation was that Chelsea were in pole position to (re-)sign Romelu Lukaku from Everton.

Ultimately though it was former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho who benefits from Lukaku's Goodison Park exit as his Manchester United bought the Belgian striker for a £75 million (€84 million) fee.

That forced Chelsea's hand, given that they are on the hunt for a marquee forward, as Diego Costa's expected departure approaches.

With Antonio Conte having told the Spain international that his services are not required next season, the gap will now be filled by another Spanish striker in the shape of Alvaro Morata.

A £60 million deal with Real Madrid was announced yesterday by Chelsea and it's the latest spoke on the wheel in the striker merry-go-round in Europe.

The Morata deal was announced shortly before last night's Off The Ball Newsround and Kevin Kilbane gave his take on the situation in regards to expectations of Morata and Lukaku as well as Costa's probable exit.

"I love Costa. I think Costa's incredible. Lukaku went for 75 million pound sterling, I think that's probably about right. I think that's 50:50, a flip of the coin between [Morata] and Lukaku. Lukaku has obviously got pedigree in the Premier League. That's the thing that would probably lean to Lukaku's favour. But I'm gutted if and when Costa goes because he's class," said Kev.
