"We needed that to go in" - Martin O'Neill laments missing the chances to take two-goal lead

"Really disappointed obviously, well beaten in the end, off to a really good start, we had a good chance to make it 2-0 and the two goals we conceded in the space of a couple of minutes just knocked us for six."

That was the immediate reaction from Martin O'Neill in the post-match press conference after witnessing a 5-1 defeat to Denmark in the second leg of the FIFA World Cup playoff that emphatically prevented Ireland from going to Russia next summer.

"Very, very poor goals as far as we're concerned," the Ireland manager continued, " Really poor and of course it turns the tide. It means then that you're chasing a game.

Oisin also caught up with Ireland goalkeeper Darren Randolph after the game:

"And we needed some goals in the second half to try and get back into the game. Made a couple of changes and obviously as we're trying to press, Denmark took advantage of us and deserved to go through and beat us convincingly in the end."

He added that "we definitely needed the second goal".

"While Denmark had a chance themselves [at 1-0], we had two decent chances to make it 2-0, particularly James [McClean's] which has just flown past the post. We needed that to go in really to give us a really strong foothold in the game and even if Denmark would score, we're still in command of the game," said O'Neill.
