Stephen Kenny tells us why he's chosen to extend his Dundalk stay

Winning a fourth League of Ireland Premier Division title in a row might be out of reach this season due to Cork City's blistering form throughout the campaign, but there is good news for the Lilywhites.

Manager Stephen Kenny, who has presided over three successive league titles, FAI Cup and an adventure in Europe last season has extended his contract until 2020, increasing the stability around the club in the long-term.

Speaking to Off The Ball's SSE Airtricity League podcast with Oisin Langan, Kenny explained that his satisfaction at the club has prompted him to stay for the long haul and that it does away with any sense of uncertainty.

"It's been a great journey over the last few seasons at Dundalk Football Club and I've been very privileged to be manager of the club," he told Oisin.

"This is my fifth season now at Dundalk and obviously you have to make decisions sometimes with regard to sometimes players want to know what your intentions are, the owners of the club what your intentions are, so certainly by making a firm commitment you sort of let everyone know where you stand and where they stand. You can go ahead and negotiate the players' contracts and so forth."

Kenny retains the ambition to manage at the highest level.

"I would like to manage at the highest level that I possibly can. I have that understanding with the owners of the club and they understand that," he said, adding that the ambition for Dundalk is to qualify regularly for European football, packing out the Aviva Stadium for big European nights as happened in the Champions League qualifiers last summer against Legia Warsaw.

"It's the forefront of my mind in my decision to stay at Dundalk," he said.

"If we were to win [the league] next year and win one or two rounds in the Europa League, I'm informed that we would be seeded going forwards, that that's how close our ranking is to being seeded, so these are things that certainly motivate me as a manager and motivate the players."
