Spain spoil England's night in Wembley friendly

England have thrown away a two goal lead late on in their friendly with Spain at Wembley as Gareth Southgate was denied a third win as interim national manager.

The visitors scored in the 89th and 96th minute to finish 2-2.

Adam Lallana and Jamie Vardy had put the home side on course for a seemingly easy win against a country that had dominated world football between 2008 and 2012.

Lallana's goal came by way of a penalty on nine minutes after Vardy was fouled by ex-Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina.

And Vardy put his name on the scoresheet with a header shortly after the break.

With England cruising, two late goals prevented victory.

First Iago Aspas, who did not make the grade at Liverpool before re-finding form upon his return to Celta Viga, pulled one back.

And then Real Madrid midfielder Isco equalised deep into stoppage time.

Southgate remains the favourite to be appointed as the new permanent England manager.

Meanwhile, Northern Ireland's fine run of home form is over after a 3-0 friendly defeat to Croatia in Belfast.

Michael O'Neill's side had been hoping to make it 11 games unbeaten at Windsor Park.
