Sport Ireland to suspend IABA funding from July 1st

Sport Ireland have announced they intend to suspend their funding to the IABA from the start of next month.

In a statement released on Wednesday morning, Sport Ireland revealed that they will stop funding the Association "unless certain criteria are satisfied".

Following a meeting last Friday, the Sport Ireland board revealed they felt the IABA were "in breach of its terms and conditions of funding" and decided to suspend all funding to the Association at the end of June.

While the funding is set to cease in the coming weeks, Sport Ireland revealed the IABA have enough funding to last until the end of September, having been given 75% of their grants already for 2017.

"This decision will not impact Sport Ireland’s direct athlete investment through the International Carding Scheme in 2017," the statement continued.

Sport Ireland also acknowledged the progress made by the IABA in recent months, including the hiring of former World Champion Bernard Dunne has High Performance Director and the relocation of the High Performance Unit from the National Stadium to the Sport Ireland Institute.

Despite the progress made, the IABA have made the decision to suspend funding at such a crucial time. The European Championships take place later this month in Ukraine. The event counts as a qualifier for the World Championships later this year.
