Stan Wawrinka shocks Novak Djokovic to win the US Open

Just as he did last year in the French Open final, Stan Wawrinka shocked Novak Djokovic to win a Grand Slam Final, as he won his first US Open title.

Wawrinka is now three-from-three in Grand Slam finals, having added his US Open crown, to wins in Melbourne and Roland Garros. The 31-year-old only needs to win at Wimbledon to complete the career Grand Slam. His best performance in London is two quarter-final appearances in 2014 and 2015.

The Swiss star won in four sets in Flushing Meadows are conceding the first set to Djokovic. After lasting just under four hours, the third seed won 6-7, 6-4, 7-5, 6-3.

Wawrinka's win continues his excellent run in tournament finals. He was won 11 in a row since, January 2014. The Swiss' last loss in a final came against Nicolas Mahut in June 2013.

An emotional Wawrinka said after the match that he put everything into the tournament. Before this tournament, he had reached two of the previous three US Open's semi-finals.

"I came here without expecting anything but every time I stepped on court I won. I'm completely empty. I had to bring everything I had and there was so much emotion. This is something I have never had before. My goal is to give everything I have and be the best I can be."

Despite the win, the Swiss remains in third place in the World Rankings, although he has closed the gap on Andy Murray in second place.
