Stephen Kenny calls for lifetime bans for match-fixing in League of Ireland

Stephen Kenny has called for lifetime bans for anyone convicted of match-fixing in League of Ireland football.

A strong deterrent such as that is the only way to guarantee it won't happen in the domestic game, according to the Dundalk manager.

Kenny joined Bohemian's Ian Morris and Galway United under-17 manager Alan Murphy on The Saturday Panel and speaking to Nathan Murphy, he said: "What I would say is that anyone convicted of match-fixing should be banned for life.

"They should absolutely be banned if they're involved in betting patterns in matches that they're playing in and if it's related to players involved in any sort of throwing games for profit - I think they should be banned for life.

"I just have no time for it. It denigrates the league, it denigrates the players within the league for anyone who is involved in it and I'm just completely against it.

"The FAI tried to get involved in it last year and prosecute players - it's very hard to prove. The evidence is difficult to prove but I do think it was important it was highlighted in that regard and I think a strong stance must be taken," he added.
