Steven Donnelly will be the next Irish boxer to turn pro

Irish Olympian Steven Donnelly has confirmed that he will be following in the footsteps of team-mates Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlan by turn pro in the coming few weeks.

The 28-year-old made it to the welterweight quarter-finals in Rio.

However, he did not advance to a medal placing after he was beaten by Moroccan fighter Mohamed Rabii.

The Commonwealth Games bronze medallist is in talks with at least two American promoters at the moment.

"I'm now looking forward to going pro and I know for a fact that I will be a better pro than I was an amateur," he says.

"At the minute I’m in negotiations with two American promoters and I still have lots of questions to ask them because it is my career on the line after all."

The Ballymena native would follow in the footsteps of Conlan and Barnes by turning pro.

Conlan has signed up for Bob Arum's Top Rank Promotions, while Barnes has joined the MGM stable.
