Steven Reid turns down Sligo Rovers' approach

Sligo Rovers are continuing their quest to find a new manager.

One person who it won't be though, is Steven Reid. The former Republic of Ireland international has turned down the chance to be interviewed for the job.

Reid, who played for Ireland 23 times, was part of the 2002 World Cup squad. He retired from playing in 2015, after spells with the likes of Millwall, Blackburn Rovers, West Brom and Millwall.

According to the Irish Independent, the 36-year-old turned down advances from The Showgrounds to replace Dave Robertson. The former Peterborough United manager left the club earlier this month.

Reid is currently working with Reading in The Championship as a first-team coach under manager Jaap Stam. The Royals are currently in third place, and are guaranteed a spot in the play-offs if they win one of their last three games.

The Irish international is the latest to turn down the opportunity to manage the 2012 League Champions, with former manager Micky Adams also refusing the opportunity to return to the north-west.

Reid is not the first Irish international to be linked with the job in recent years. After Paul Cook left the club in 2012, Kevin Kilbane was reported to be interested in beginning his managerial career at The Showgrounds.

Declan McIntryre, Robertson's former assistant manger is currently in charge in a caretaker capacity. In three matches, he has led the team to two wins, including a 1-0 win over Finn Harps in the EA Sports Cup on Monday.

Sligo Rovers currently lie in eleventh place in the Premier Division table. The team have won two of their opening nine matches.
