Struggling Hull City part ways with Mike Phelan

Premier League side Hull City have sacked head coach Mike Phelan.

The decision was made just a day after the January 2nd Premier League defeat at West Brom by a 3-1 margin.

Hull, who were promoted from the English Football League Championship via the playoffs at the end of last season, find themselves bottom of the division after 20 games of the season as Swansea City leapfrogged them on Tuesday night after beating Crystal Palace away.

Last summer, transfer movement was limited at the club until the final days of the window when Ryan Mason was signed from Tottenham for about €15 million on August 30th, while goalkeeper David Marshall arrived from Cardiff City for €4 million.

Following the sudden departure of Steve Bruce in July, former Manchester United assistant coach Phelan became caretaker manager for the opening months of the season until he was confirmed as head coach in October.

However, the season has been fraught with difficulty when it comes to results.

They have collected 13 points from 20 games, with two of their three wins coming on the first two match days of the league season.

From September 17th to October 29th, the Tigers endured a run of six defeats.

Their last league victory came on November 6th against Southampton.

Since then they have picked up just three points from a possible 27 across nine fixtures. They had led West Brom on Monday afternoon but succumbed to a 3-1 loss.

The club say they will look for a successor to Phelan in "due course".

Their next fixture is an FA Cup third round clash against Premier League relegation rivals Swansea.
