Sunderland confirm Darron Gibson signing in double swoop

Sunderland have announced a pair of signings from Everton with both Darron Gibson and Bryan Oviedo moving to the Stadium of Light.

Ireland midfielder Gibson has been a peripheral figure at Everton this season under manager Ronald Koeman and has only featured in a single EFL Cup tie in the Autumn.

The 29 year old who originally joined Everton from Manchester United in 2012 when David Moyes was in charge at Goodison Park, will now link up with his former manager at Sunderland as they battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

He has joined on an 18 month deal that will run until the end of next season.

Speaking to the Sunderland official website, Moyes said: "We’ve got Darron on an 18-month contract and I think he’s a very good footballer; he’ll add a bit of quality with his passing and his play and I’d love him to add goals.

"He has a really good strike and if he can add goals from midfield it would be a big bonus."

Gibson has won 29 caps for Ireland during his international career but injuries have made him a peripheral figure during the Martin O'Neill era.

Also joining Sunderland from Everton is Costa Rica international Bryan Oviedo. The 26 year old has signed a deal until 2020.

He also originally joined Everton in 2012 when Moyes was in charge there.

He will strengthen the manager's options on the left flank with his ability to play at full back and further forward.

He will bolster a portion of the team that has been weakened by the departure of Dutch left back Patrick van Aanholt to Sam Allardyce's Crystal Palace.

Sunderland have also signed another ex-Evertonian in the shape of former England centre back Joleon Lescott during the January transfer window.
