The FAI announce a review into Athlone Town's running

The FAI have ordered an independent review into Athlone Town FC after the First Division team failed to field a team on Friday night against Waterford United.

A number or players refused to travel to the game in Waterford, and Alan Mathews' side were forced to postpone the match on Friday afternoon, hours before kick-off.

Fran Gavin, director of the SSE Airtricity League called the late postponement as "unacceptable". He also confirmed the team were to be charged for "for bringing the game into disrepute".

In a statement released by the FAI last night, they revealed that an independent review of the club will take place in the coming weeks. The Association plans to speak to all the relevant stakeholders.

"The Board of the Football Association of Ireland will appoint an Independent person to meet with all of the relevant stakeholders of Athlone Town FC, including the Chairman, Board members, Management and Players, as well as supporters groups and potential investors, to discuss recent issues and the long-term future of the club."

Athlone Town currently lie second from bottom in the First Division. They have won one of their opening 12 league games. Home attendances have been poor too, with the club failing to attract 500 fans to a game at any point this season.
