Vincent Kompany withdrawn during Belgium warm-up as 'precautionary measure'

Vincent Kompany's miserable fortune with injuries appeared to continue last night as the defender was replaced in the Belgian national squad at the last minute.

Roberto Martinez's side faced the Netherlands in an international friendly on Wednesday night and Kompany was withdrawn for the warm-up.

"There is no injury," said Martinez after the game. "We did not want to take any risks with him and Kompany did not feel well after the warm-up."

The Manchester City captain has struggled with injuries in recent years, with calf and hamstring injuries impeding on his career. Kompany missed the European Championships this summer in France with a thigh injury and former City boss Manuel Pellegrini had to plan for large parts of last season without a club leader.

The centre-back was named on the teamsheet for the friendly in Amsterdam, but was then replaced by Watford's Christian Kabasele.

"I want every player to be 100%," Martinez added. "I would be surprised if he can play Sunday, but it is still too early to say.

"We will have to assess the situation, especially with his club. If he is not ready, I will take another defender."

Davy Klaassen's penalty put the home side ahead after 38 minutes before Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco drew Belgium level with less than ten minutes remaining.

Tottenham's Vincent Janssen was withdrawn before the half hour mark after suffering concussion.
