"This is always what I dreamt about" - Rob Heffernan to be presented with Olympic bronze next month

Rob Heffernan will be presented with his London 2012 Olympic Bronze Medal in the Concert Hall, City Hall, Cork next month.

The event, which will take place on November 3 at 7:00pm, will be hosted by the Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr Des Cahill and the medal will be presented by Acting President of the Olympic Council of Ireland William O’Brien.

The Cork athlete finished fourth in the men's 50 kilometre walk in London but is set to be upgraded to bronze after Russian gold medalist Sergey Kirdyapkin's appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport was upheld.

Kirdyapkin was banned in January 2015 over irregularities in his blood passport. Originally, the Russian has his results annulled between periods in 2009 and 2012 but that did not include the period of his Olympic triumph.

"This is always what I dreamt about, being presented with an Olympic Medal," Heffernan said in a statement.

"It would of course have been wonderful to have received it in London but now to receive it on Irish soil in my home City of Cork, with my own family, friends, supporters on the 100 year anniversary of 1916, is a fitting and very special way for Irish people to celebrate Irish Olympic Sporting success."

Willie O’Brien, Acting President Olympic Council of Ireland said: "This occasion on November 3rd is very special indeed. It is the first time an Olympic Medal will be presented on Irish soil. It will be a very proud occasion of the Olympic Movement in Ireland, Athletics Ireland and of course for Rob, his family, friends and supporters."
