The good news is the player will be back on the rugby field in a few months and we all wish him a speedy recovery.
He is not the first athlete who has been involved in a freak accident off the field which has unfortunately resulted in a temporary absence from playing activity.
Santiago Canizares and an aftershave bottle
Between 1993 and 2006 when the former Real Madrid and Valencia goalkeeper was still part of the Spain national team, the now 46-year-old was one of the top Spanish shot-stoppers of his generation.
In 2002, he was due to be Spain's No 1 at that summer's World Cup, only for bad luck to intervene.
A couple of weeks before the tournament, a bottle of aftershave dropped onto his foot, severing a tendon and ultimately ruling him out of a World Cup in which Spain reached the quarter-finals.
Canizares did insist that: "I do not consider myself to be unlucky by any means."
But in his stead, Iker Casillas started as No 1 in Korea & Japan, properly kickstarting an international career that saw the now FC Porto keeper lift the World Cup in 2010 and win two European Championships.
Canizares did return to the 2006 World Cup but only as a deputy, getting a run-out in a group win over Saudi Arabia, which turned out to be his last for Spain.
David Seaman from a remote control
The former Arsenal and England keeper once suffered a muscular injury in an incident involving a remote control.
Said incident involved bending down to pick up the remote from the floor.
Fellow goalkeepers Carlo Cudicini and David James also reportedly suffered freak injuries involving reaching for remote controls.
Svein Grondalen and a moose
One truly unexpected injury to a sportsperson that occurred far from the field of play involved former Norway international defender Svein Grondalen.
He missed a World Cup qualifier after an incident with a moose while running in a forest.
Reportedly, the moose didn't hit him directly. Instead it charged at him, he dived out of the way, rolled down a hill but cut his leg, which had to be stitched by his club doctor at Rosenborg BK.
Now 61, Grondalen won 77 caps for Norway between 1973 and 1984.
