Tiger Woods arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence

Tiger Woods has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in Jupiter, Florida in the early hours of Monday morning.

American news outlet WPTV report that the 14-time Major winner, a Jupiter Island resident, was taken into custody at 3am on Monday morning.

Records seen by the by the Sun-Sentinel indicate that he was released from custody at 10.50am. The documents show he was booked at 7.18am and released on his own recognisance shortly after.

The 41-year-old has not played competitively since withdrawing from the Omega Dubai Desert Classic in February after one round because of back pain.

Woods has struggled with back injuries and has recently undergone successful fusion surgery, claiming 'he hadn't felt this good in years'.

"My surgeon and physiotherapist say the operation was successful. It's just a matter of not screwing up and letting it fuse," Woods wrote on his website.

"I'm walking and doing my exercises, and taking my kids to and from school. All I can do is take it day by day. There's no hurry.

"But, I want to say unequivocally, I want to play professional golf again."

The incident is not the first time Woods has made headlines away from the golf course.

His private life unravelled in 2009 over allegations of affairs with several women that ultimately led to the break up of his marriage.
